Canon (UK) Limited Annual Report 2011

2011 was a demanding year due to a succession of challenging events. The catastrophic earthquake which struck Japan in March was followed by economic turmoil in Europe, triggered by the Greek debt crisis in May, and the massive flooding in Thailand in September.

Following a successful first quarter, the recovery of our business throughout the rest of the year is very much a testament to the commitment and competence of our people and whether employees are new to Canon or long-standing, we are committed to helping them to develop to meet our objectives so that they can continue to play an active role in our ongoing success.

In our Business Imaging Group, several large managed services wins demonstrated customer confidence in our business model and accelerated our shift towards being a service-led organization.  As the move towards increased out-sourcing continues, our market leading hardware and software technology will fundamentally change the way we operate with customers and allow us to integrate into their business in a way that is flexible and scalable, depending on their needs.

As a corporate citizen, Canon takes its responsibilities for environmental and sustainable operations very seriously. As well as producing reduced or lighter packaging, or products that consume less energy in use, we continually look at ways to make our own business more sustainable. We do this, for example, by improving our logistics for product delivery, pursuing a strong environmental management system, as evidenced by our global ISO14001 accreditation,  and operating a green procurement procedure. We also continue to seek new ways to grow our business, serve our customers, meet our stakeholders’ expectations and benefit our communities.

Our consumer products such as cameras, camcorders and printers continue to attract awards, most noticeably the Which? Best Photography Brand 2011, an industry leading and independent body which recognizes businesses that have achieved positive change and deliver excellent products and services to UK customers. In addition, we very proudly received, for the 11th consecutive year, the Readers Digest Top Camera Brand in their 2011 pan European Most Trusted Brands Survey.

In a challenging economic climate it is paramount that we place our customers at the heart of everything we do.  Our investment into research and development, 8.7% of global sales in 2011, remains paramount in allowing us to create innovative products and solutions for customers and will give us competitive advantage in helping us achieve our ambition to be No 1 in all core markets and become a truly excellent global corporation.
