Canon and the EU Regulation EC No 1907/2006 - REACH

Updated on 14 January 2009

On 1 June 2007 the Regulation EC No 1907/2006 for Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) entered into force. The Regulation aims to improve the protection of human health and the environment from the risks that can be posed by chemicals. REACH replaces existing legislation with a streamlined and improved regulation.

REACH enforces review of the properties of chemicals, identifying the associated health and environmental risks and ensures that information is communicated to suppliers and downstream users. In line with Canon’s principles on environmental responsibility, we take a proactive approach towards legal compliance, especially with regard to health and environment. Canon and our suppliers of chemical products have completed the pre-registration of all chemical substances we import into the EU in volumes of 1 ton per year or more. Canon is now preparing the final registration for these substances according the extended registration deadlines from 2010-2018.

The candidate list of substances of very high concern under Article 59 of the REACH Regulation was published on 28 October 2008. The majority of Canon products are considered ‘articles’ under the REACH Regulation and we are aware of the information requirements, among others, for articles according to Article 33.  Below is Canon’s status as of today:

It is generally known that cables of electric and electronic equipment may contain phthalates, including the following that is listed on the candidate list for substances of very high concern.

• Bis (2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP)        • CAS.No.117-81-7

The substance listed above may also be contained in our cables for electric and electronic equipment above the threshold level of 0.1% by weight.
We have asked our suppliers of materials, components and finished products to provide us information on substances concerned in the supplied items. The latest findings of our investigations will be posted on our website. Canon works closely with its supply chain to ensure continuous compliance with the REACH Regulation.

For all UK and Ireland enquiries, please e-mail REACHenquiries.
