The Re-Manufacturing Initiative

Under a law widely debated in Germany (Ordinance on Avoidance, Reduction and Recycling of Waste from Used Electric and Electronic Appliances, commonly called the “Electronic Scrap Ordinance”), appliance manufacturers are responsible for the collection and recycling of virtually all electronic products no longer required by consumers. This kind of legislation is a world first, and the results are being keenly followed worldwide.

Irrespective of this legislation, at Canon it is our belief that manufacturers have a responsibility to eliminate the burden on the environment created by products that are no longer of use to consumers.

Waste products must be collected and then recycled.

The impact on the environment is clearly less if a part is reused in its existing form rather than converted back into raw material. This is the idea behind copier re-manufacturing.

Outmoded copiers are disassembled and the parts are removed. They are then subjected to rigorous testing, graded according to fixed standards and where possible used to assemble new products. These are then tested and checked thoroughly before shipping, to ensure that performance and reliability is identical to products manufactured from all-new parts.

The automobile industry has maintenance personnel and a proper inspection system, as well as an established market for second-hand vehicles. The office equipment industry has not yet reached this stage. At Canon, we believe that re-manufacturing of copiers is necessary in terms of our Principles for Environmental Assurance, and the implementation of this ideal has been possible without forgetting our dedication to quality and customer satisfaction. We guarantee customers that our re-manufactured copiers are as reliable as all-new products.
