Photo by Tim Hetherington for Vanity Fair The exhibition Each year World Press Photo invites press photographers worldwide to participate in the World Press Photo contest. First, second and third prizes are awarded by an independent international jury in ten categories, for picture stories as well as single images. The prizewinning pictures selected by the international jury appear in the yearbook and a traveling exhibition. In the 2008 contest, 80,536 pictures were submitted by 5,019 photographers from 125 countries. The World Press Photo of the Year 2007 was awarded to the UK photographer Tim Hetherington.
