Winning Image
The winning World Press Photo of the Year 2009 image (above) shows women shouting in protest from a rooftop in Tehran, taken by Pietro Masturzo, a freelance photographer from Italy. The image was taken following the contested presidential elections in Iran and was shot on a Canon EOS Digital SLR camera. Pietro Masturzo will receive a cash prize of €10,000 from World Press Photo. In addition, Canon Europe will present him with a Canon EOS Digital SLR camera and lens kit. About the competition
This year's competition saw a record 5,847 professional photographers from 128 countries submit images - an increase of 6 per cent from last year. The winning image was chosen from over 101,960 images. Our advanced Digital SLR camera range and EF Lenses have been the product of choice for many photojournalists for a number of years. Alongside the prestigious World Press Photographer of the Year award and prize money, Pietro will receive a state-of-the-art EOS 5D Mark II Digital SLR camera from Canon. Exhibition of winning images
An exhibition of the prize-winning World Press Photo images will be shown from Friday 23rd April until the 20th June 2010, in the Oude Kerk, Amsterdam.
