Mr. Mitarai, President and CEO of Canon Inc. is effusive about the philosophy underlying the company’s activities. In an interview he said: "I love the idealism of our first President (Dr. Takeshi Mitarai, who introduced the 3 Selfs). I think it is my mandate to transmit that idealism to the company." "I want to provoke a renaissance of the 3 Selfs: self-motivation, self-management, self-awareness." Self-motivation means being proactive with regard to whatever the task at hand is. This is a far cry from the position where an employee cannot do anything without receiving orders from his boss. Self-management means maintaining firm discipline over oneself. If a promise is made, it must be kept. If something must be done, check on it without having to be told to do so. Follow the rules Self-awareness means that one must always bear in mind one’s position, one’s mission, and the prevailing conditions… you must know what is expected from you, think back on how work is going and what action is being taken. Then you must
have the attitude of being prepared to adjust your own course.’ Mr Mitarai has continued to use every possible occasion – meeting with employees, visiting production sites or at other times – to convey the Canon culture.
