The list represents the paper’s annual competition to find the top 60 companies that are striving to improve their environmental performance. The survey takes account of the views of employees - who get to rate their organisation’s green credentials - as well as assessing the environmental performance, policies and practices of businesses. From pioneering the collection and recycling of used toner cartridges in 1990 to Canon’s corporate philosophy, Kyosei, the Japanese word that means "living and working together for the common good", the environment is at the heart of Canon’s business. The investment in its UK headquarters in Woodhatch, with its energy efficient features that helped to cut electricity usage by 15% in 2008, has played a significant part in raising awareness and reducing its environmental impact. Achieving the international standard for environmental management (ISO 14001) and partnering with WWF for over ten years has also boosted its credentials. "We are delighted to feature again in the best green companies list in The Sunday Times," said Andy Vickers, Managing Director, Canon UK & Ireland. "We are committed to improving our working environment and our work practices in order to minimise our impact on the environment and feel very proud to be recognised for the input we have made so far. We have a number of initiatives being progressed this year, which we hope to see us and our employees reduce our environmental impact even further."
