An event to celebrate the culmination of the project will be held for 90 NVQ Advanced Business Studies students and teachers, where they will watch five shortlisted teams present their promotional campaign idea to Canon Sales & Marketing professionals. The panel will then select the winning team and each member of that team will be presented with a Canon digital IXUS 80IS camera. The project was devised to provide students with an insight into what it’s like to work for a global technology company and the sort of tasks they would be expected to carry out in a sales or marketing role. The teams were challenged to create a summer promotional campaign for one of five Canon product ranges, including the popular PowerShot, SELPHY and EOS products. They were firstly briefed on what Canon was looking for in the promotion, and given further background information on the products, the budget and the five existing retail customers the promotion should be aimed at. They were also provided with basic research data to influence their campaign strategy – replicating the process the Canon marketing team goes through in their roles. Each team was then asked to create a ten minute presentation of their campaign, helped by a Key Account Manager from Canon’s Mass Channel, who visited the college to offer advice and provided extra support as needed. Sarah Sullivan, Sales Director, Mass Retail, Canon UK, says: “It’s been great working with the students at Reigate College on this project as they’ve been so enthusiastic about the task and have come up with some really fresh creative ideas. For me personally it’s also been really interesting talking to students who are considering embarking on a career in sales or marketing and helping them to understand what’s involved in working for a company like Canon.”
