| We carry out an employee commitment survey in 16 languages through an independent external organisation. Questions include how well managers motivate and keep employees informed; whether employees find Canon a good place to work; and whether employees believe Canon is a socially responsible company. More than 75% of employees regularly respond and business areas and departments develop action plans to address the key concerns identified.
Employee representatives are also invited to join the Canon European Consultative Committee. The committee comprises representatives of Canon employees and Canon management who exchange information and views, at European level, on the current status and future progress of Canon Europe’s business. Depending on the laws prevailing in the countries where we operate, which take precedence, employees may join unions and take part in collective bargaining when appropriate. As a minimum, we aim to have ongoing dialogue and communication with employees. |

| New employees receive an induction programme tailored to their job role. Our policy is that every employee has at least one formal appraisal meeting with their line manager each year. This measures performance against objectives, using a standard measurement system, and skills against competencies.
A personal development plan and training is identified. This is delivered through a variety of learning options including the Canon Academy with online learning and mentoring. We recognise employee contribution in a number of ways including long-service awards and our 3 Selfs awards. If the need arises, there are established grievance processes that employees may follow in accordance with local legislation. Similarly, clearly communicated disciplinary procedures exist, in case of performance or behaviour issues, again in accordance with local legislation. |

| San-Ji spirit, or the 3 Selfs outlines the standards of personal behaviour expected from employees under the Canon Code of Conduct. 3 Selfs awards are made at national and regional level, quarterly and annually, to encourage and recognise 3 types of behaviour:
• Self-motivation: taking the initiative and looking for solutions
• Self-management: effective personal planning and organisation
• Self-awareness: being aware of the impact of your actions and words on others |

| Diversity is a business imperative for Canon, embracing our philosophy of all people working together for the common good. As we operate in so many diverse countries and territories, employees undertake diversity training. This helps everyone understand and value the diversity of people, cultures and our business.
To make the most of our multi-cultural environment and marketplace, we run cultural awareness workshops. Whereas national offices mainly employ own nationals, more than 30 different nationalities work in our European headquarters office reflecting our regional structure. The company’s management board of 13 is made up of 6 different nationalities. Read more about our Diversity focus. |
