Panel Technology

The panels within a projector are key components in determining the resolution, clarity and contrast of the final image. Three types of panels dominate the industry: LCD, DLP and LCOS. LCD and DLP are the most common, but each has its drawbacks. XEED projectors use LCOS panels enhanced by Canon’s unique AISYS technology to harness the very best of all technologies, while eliminating the drawbacks.

LCD
LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) panels contain separate liquid crystal elements (pixels) that can be adjusted to allow varying amounts of light through. LCD panels produce excellent colour gradation but suffer from a ‘lattice effect’, caused by the circuitry between each pixel blocking light and creating a fine mesh over the projected image.

DLP
DLP (Digital Light Processing) uses light on a reflective chip containing thousands of tiny ‘micro-mirrors’ – one for each pixel. These mirrors can be tilted to turn each pixel on or off. In all but the most expensive DLP projectors, colour is then added by passing the light through a spinning colour wheel. This technique eliminates latticing but can result in a highly distracting rainbow effect.

LCOS
LCOS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) panels combine the best of both technologies. A layer of liquid crystal pixels is applied over a reflective mirror substrate, with the drive circuitry placed underneath. Because LCOS places the drive circuitry at the rear of the panel and does not require a colour wheel, it eliminates both ‘lattice’ and ‘rainbow’ effects, producing smooth, seamless images with exceptional colour gradation. The LCOS panels within XEED projectors create images at native XGA (1024 x 768) and SXGA+ (1400 x 1050) resolutions.
