Product packaging can be remarkably similar, making it hard to distinguish the difference between counterfeit products and genuine products.

Possible indicators of counterfeit ink cartridges include:

  • Colour of the packaging differs
  • Different materials used in the packaging
  • Resolution of images
  • Text font (character size, style etc) can differ
  • Look and feel of the cartridge itself

The Canon hologram
Genuine Canon consumable products make use of security features and the latest technologies to distinguish them from counterfeits.  One of the security features incorporates a unique hologram that is harder to imitate than conventional holograms and provides proof that the packaging is genuine.

As with conventional holograms, the unique hologram used on genuine Canon products changes its design depending on the viewing angle.

The hologram shows the word ‘Canon’ running horizontally in a number of bands. In between these Canon ‘ribbons’ you should see a helix design, also running horizontally, overprinted with the word ‘genuine’.

In addition, the hologram has a unique colour-changing feature. Front on, it should appear as an iridescent gold, but when tipped into a horizontal position, a bright, iridescent green. If this transition does not occur, the hologram is fake.

Report counterfeit products
If you would like to report (possible) counterfeit, you can forward the product and the invoice to ICCE (Imaging Supplies Consumables Coalition of Europe). The ICCE provides a counterfeit identification service.

If the product is counterfeit, Canon will investigate further.
