FAQ: What precautions should I take with memory cards?

Helpful Information:

Solution:

Please read the following precautions for memory cards (CF cards, SD cards or MultiMediaCard(s) etc.)

1. Precautions for memory cards while camera is performing any of the following operations

Never perform the following actions while the camera is writing, reading, erasing or transmitting data to/from the memory card. (It could corrupt the image data.)

(1-1) Subject the camera body to vibration or shocks.

(1-2) Turn the camera's power off, or open the memory card slot/battery cover.

2. Precautions for formatting or editing the memory cards

Please note that memory cards formatted or edited by using other manufacturers' cameras, a computer or application programs, may not operate correctly in your camera.
We recommend that you use the memory cards that have been formatted in your camera.
The card supplied with your camera may be used without further formatting.

3. Precautions for handling or storing the memory cards

(3-1) Memory cards are high-precision electronic devices. Do not bend the card, apply any force or subject any shock or vibration to the card.

(3-2) Do not attempt to disassemble or alter the memory card.

(3-3) Do not allow dirt, water or foreign objects to come into contact with the terminals on the back of the card. Do not touch the terminals with your hands or metal objects.

(3-4) Do not peel off the original label on the card or cover the card with other labels or stickers.

(3-5) When writing on the card, use a soft point pen (e.g. felt-tip pen).

Using a sharp point pen (e.g. ball-point pen) or a pencil may damage the card or corrupt the recorded data.

(3-6) We recommend that you make a backup copy of important data, since some or all data recorded on the card may be corrupted or erased by electrical noise, static electricity or card malfunctions.

(3-7) Moving a memory card rapidly between temperature extremes will cause condensation to form on the card and lead to a malfunction. To avoid condensation, place the memory card in a sealed plastic bag before moving it into a different temperature zone and allow it to adjust slowly to the new temperature.
If condensation forms on the card, store it at room temperature until the water droplets have evaporated naturally.

(3-8) Do not use or store the card in locations subject to dust, sand, high humidity or high temperatures.

4. Write Protect Tab

SD card has the write protect tab. Sliding the tab downward prevents recording of data and protects existing data (e.g. images). When writing on, erasing from or formatting the SD card, slide the tab upward.
