FAQ: Can I control a Speedlite or other external flash with the internal flash of my Digital EOS?

Helpful Information:

Solution:

No, you can't use the internal flash to control an external one. Because of the E-TTL-metering of the Digital EOS an external flash with a photo diode would go off when the camera sets the preflash off. As result you would get a dark image because the external flash would go off too early. The preflash is used to measure the flash exposure needed.

The Speedlite EX series can communicate wirelessly, but not with the internal flash of the EOS. The Speedlite-Transmitter ST-E2 or a Speedlite 550EX or 580EX as master is required for this.

The only slave flash that can be controlled by the internal flash of the EOS or any external E-TTL-flash is the HF-DC1.
