It pays to register

Have you ever wondered why Canon is so keen for you to make sure you register all your Canon products?

Registering is easy, simply log-in to the site and then click on “Update your Details”. You can then update all your details with Canon including adding all the products you own. Adding the Serial Number can really pay off for you too.

The key ways Canon can do more for you are:

• Help if you lose your product

• Additional help if it is stolen

• Extra benefits from Canon, dependent on what products you own

Help if you lose your Canon product

If you register your product, including its Serial Number, Canon will have a permanent record that can come in useful. Everyday the Customer Service Department helps people become reunited with their products.

The following story from You Connect Member Donald Kenny is an example how:

Testimonial

“I was on holiday in Israel and had already visited some of the most amazing sites. My PowerShot A80 had been a treasure and I had 230 photos stored on it.

We were visiting the Church of the Beatitudes by the Sea of Galilee and took a moment’s rest on the steps outside. Instead of storing the camera in my rucksack as I had always done I put it down next to me.

When we moved off I left it behind and despite rushing back 15 minutes later it had gone. No one had seen it and there was no official lost property office.

It wasn’t just the camera – it had been a faithful servant for a couple of years – but the photos too. I had been looking forward to sharing my pictures when I got back home.

What I didn’t know at that time was that the camera was spotted by a German visitor, Jens Siebert. He discussed with his Guide what would be the best way to reunite it with its owner and they decided to email Canon to see if they could help.

I didn’t know companies like Canon did this sort of thing but as soon as they were contacted they checked the Serial Number on their database and found my details. By the time I got home there was an email from the You Connect team asking if I had lost a PowerShot A80. I couldn’t believe it.

In fact I only really believed it a short while later when the camera was couriered to me – still with the 230 shots (two of which are on this page). Jens and I have continued to communicate with each other, and I am so grateful to him for the effort he has put in.

I’ve learnt a few things from this episode. Don’t ever lose sight of your camera, back up your images, even when on holiday and always register your products; you never know when it might be a life-saver.”

Claiming on your insurance policy

If you have your Canon product stolen, your insurance company will usually only accept a claim if you have proof of purchase; something that can be difficult to find. So, it is worth remembering that some insurance companies will accept as proof, the details from Canon’s database as long as it is complete, including date of purchase and Serial Number.

Note: not all insurance companies will, so you need to check. But if they do Customer Service will be happy to help.

It’s a small world

Canon is now offering customers across Europe a new service that is starting to bear fruit. If you are unfortunate enough to have a product stolen make sure you tell Canon about it and give them the Serial Number. Customer Services has created a new database of known stolen products and every time a product comes in for repair it is run against this database.

Report your stolen product by calling Canon UK Regional Competence Centre - 0844 369 0100 (calls cost 5p per min from a BT landline, call costs vary with network / service provider.)

And of course if you can’t remember your Serial Number, as long as you registered it you can go into your own You Connect account to find it.

If the Serial Number is found on the database then Canon will notify the police, who will take appropriate action.

Every month 1-2 of these products are identified and dealt with. Not a massive number, but it could be a nice surprise after such a distressing experience.

“Customer privacy and confidentiality comes first and foremost to everyone at Canon, but after that we will do everything we can to help customers become reunited with their products or make a valid insurance claim.”
