2007 was a good year overall and we entered 2008 in a strong position, managing to achieve growth as a business in the first half of the year. The last six months were more challenging as the UK headed into what was heralded 'the worst slump for 28 years', the banking system collapsed and the FTSE suffered its worst ever performance. Challenging times were not made any easier by fluctuations in the exchange rate, which undoubtedly had an effect on our ability to grow the Company.

While growth and customer service remained our key focus as the year progressed, we continued to adhere to our core values and culture, particularly in the ethical way in which we conduct our business. Our corporate philosphy of kyosei, a Japanese word meaning 'living and working togerher for the common good' is integral to the Company. In 2008, we celebated our 10 year anniversary as the first conservation partner to WWF, the global conservation organisation, which shares our common objective of harmony between humankind and the environment.
Building on our ISO 14001 accreditation achieved in 2006, we were delighted to be placed 13th in the inaugural Sunday Times Best Green Companies Award in early 2008. This Award was designed to encourage, acknowledge and publicise business and other establishments which are striving to improve their environmental perfomance. Particularly rewarding was the fact that judges looked at how engaged employees were with Company aims and whether organisations 'practised what they preached'. Some 77% of Canon's employees felt that the Company was doing everthing it could to minimise environmental impct - a very encouraging statistic.
