African Elefant

African Elephant

Information:

Differentiated from the Asian elephant by its larger ears, the African elephant inhabits areas of the African continent south of the Sahara. The largest African animal, an elephant requires 50 pounds of food per ton, everyday. They live in matriarchal societies, can live up to 70 years and during their lifespan, go through six sets of teeth. Though the African elephants’ skin can be up to one inch thick in places, it is very sensitive to sunburn and insect bites, which is why they can often be seen coating themselves in dust and mud to protect themselves. The African elephant is threatened through loss of habitat and poaching.
