Information
The Labrador Retriever was developed in Newfoundland where it was trained to jump overboard from fishing vessels and retrieve fishermen’s lines. The breed was taken to England where the Earl of Malmesbury named it the Labrador Retriever in order to
distinguish it from its close relation, the Newfoundland Retriever. The Labrador was recognised as a distinct breed by the English Kennel Club in 1903. Intelligent and generally not aggressive, the Labrador is considered an excellent family pet, and is
also popular as a guide and rescue dog. As the name suggests, the Labrador is an excellent retriever, and in the UK they were used as retrieving gun dogs. A powerful dog, the Labrador has short dense hair that repels water, and they are generally bred in
colours of yellow, black and chocolate.
