Himeji Castle

Himeji Castle

Information

Perched atop Mount Hime in Himeji City in the Hyogo Prefecture, Himeji Castle is one of the most well preserved castles in Japan. Originally built in 1346, the castle in its present incarnation was finished in 1610. Elaborately constructed with narrow passageways to prevent large numbers of invaders from entering en masse, and with openings from which rifles and arrows could be shot, in its 400-year history, the fortress has never been attacked. Also known as White Heron Castle in reference to its white stucco upper walls, Himeji Castle was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1993.
