Gasshozukuri

Information

The Gasshozukuri is an ancient style of Japanese building from the Gifu region. The structures do not require nails, instead the pillars and crossbeams are held together with ropes. Its roof has many layers and is perfect for housing large families and coping with the heavy snowfall the area receives. Gasshozukuri’s are typically found in the villages of Shirakawago and Gokayama which were registered as international cultural assets in 1995.
