The Great Buddha of Todaiji Temple is one of the world’s most magnificent Buddha temples. Built over 1200 years ago it began life in AD 745 with the work of gilding, carving, and constructing the backdrop continuing for about 26 years. Originally standing at a height of over 16 meters tall, the statue is now 14.98 meters tall – yet still magnificent.
