Triceratops

Triceratops

Information

The Triceratops, whose name means three-horned face, was a herbivorous dinosaur of the late Cretaceous period, living between 72 and 65 million years ago. At over nine metres in length, its three metre long skull is one of the largest ever discovered on a land animal. Bones of the triceratops were first uncovered in 1887 in Denver, Colorado, though it was initially mistaken for an extinct species of buffalo. Hatched from large eggs, evidence of fossilised footprints and the discovery of large collections of bones means that it is likely the Triceratops travelled in herds. Walking slowly on four legs, the Triceratops used its three horns for defence and the large frill at the back of its head is thought to have been used to protect the neck or to assist in body temperature regulation.
