Panoramic views are relatively simple to create by shooting a series of images along the length of a scene. The images are merged using PhotoStitch software (supplied with your Canon camera), giving a single long picture.

A recent development is HDR – High Dynamic Range. If you are shooting in high contrast scenes it may be difficult to get well-exposed highlights and shadows in the same photo. The HDR feature on the PowerShot S100, G12, G1 X and EOS 5D Mark III takes three successive shots at different brightness levels. The camera then selects and combines the areas with best brightness into one photo.

Alternatively, Canon’s Digital Photo Professional (DPP) software offers an HDR tool that is very easy to use. DPP is supplied with all EOS, PowerShot G and PowerShot S series cameras. This is part of the latest release of this software which can be downloaded at the Canon Download Centre. On your IXUS or PowerShot, check the wide range of special effects (e.g. Miniature Effect, Vivid Colors and Fish-eye Effect) and Scene settings including Portraits, Landscape and Night Scenes. This will often give you exactly what you want from your photo automatically. As these vary from camera to camera it is best to check your User Manual to learn more about these features on your camera. Alternatively on an EOS, consider altering the Photo Style to give the visual effect you want. Finally, make sure you absorb and appreciate the atmosphere of the places you visit – don’t live your trip through the viewfinder or screen of your camera.
