CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF THE DIGITAL EOS 5

20 years of innovation and progress since the launch of the Canon EOS 5D in September 2005. Explore each model’s significant technological advance right up to today’s EOS R5 Mark II.

THE LEGACY THAT IS THE CANON EOS 5 RANGE

Vision and progress: let’s say a huge thank you to all the photographers and video makers who built reputations on delivering remarkable imagery.

The EOS 5D Mark III is a nice compact size and I like the feel of it in my hands. It has a muted shutter sound, which is good for working in a quiet environment, and good low-light sensitivity. The overall quality is outstanding”

Think of the defining images of the past 20 years and the chances are they were shot with a Canon EOS 5D or R5, whether recording history as it happens, or the remarkable beauty of the natural world, or even a popular TV series.

A full frame digital camera is the workhorse of many professionals and enthusiasts, and Canon’s EOS 5 range of digital SLRs and mirrorless cameras has offered a continuous development of image quality, video capabilities, and familiar handling over twenty years and eight defining cameras of their era.

Many qualities define this legendary range of cameras: full frame image quality, rugged build, natural image processing, and a combination of clear control layout with a comparatively compact size. It’s no surprise the EOS 5 range of DSLRs and mirrorless cameras has been such a hit with photographers and video makers the world over.

On the EOS R5: "This is my everyday workhorse," says Brent. "The files are amazingly flexible and big enough to handle advertising shoots as well as photojournalism. The best thing I can say about the experience of looking through the viewfinder is that I forget that I'm looking through an EVF."

For Canon Ambassador Joel Santos, his sixth trip to the Li River, in the Guangxi region of China offered one of the final chances to document cormorant fishermen. Taking the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV with him, he hoped this visit to Guangxi would produce his best work yet.

"The idea was to go somewhere I already knew well, that has been important to my work, to see what I could do with the technical advances that have been made in the cameras, sensors and lenses – to push them to the limit," Joel says. "At the same time, I was trying to reinvent something that I’ve shot many times before."

Joel’s experiences are typical of photographers who love to use the Canon EOS 5D and R5 series of cameras: a familiar subject shot with fresh eyes and the latest in imaging tech: as the cameras evolve, so does our creative vision, and our way of seeing the world in a different way.

The EOS R5 is the perfect camera. It feels just right in your hand and is sturdy, which is important in my line of work," says Daniel. "The face-tracking AF system has changed the way I focus and has considerably decreased the times I have missed the focus in chaotic situations.”
