Cinematographers and DOPs visiting EnergaCAMERIMAGE can expect to get their hands on the best Canon Cinema EOS cameras and cine lenses, view screenings of industry-leading films, hear inspirational talks, take part in workshops, meet the prestigious Golden Frog award-winners and more.
The international film festival celebrates the artistry involved in cinematography, rewarding productions and producers for their aesthetic and technical mastery. The 26th edition takes place at the Opera Nova Festival Centre in Bydgoszcz, Poland, from 10 to 17 November 2018.
Returning as an official sponsor of the event, Canon will host a number of talks and workshops, as well as running a stand where visitors can touch and try the latest Cinema EOS cameras and cine lenses. Here are some of the highlights.
Each year, a highlight of EnergaCAMERIMAGE is the opportunity to attend screenings of films, documentaries and music videos – many of which go on to win awards including Oscars – as well as insightful seminars and workshops. Canon organises some of the events on offer throughout the week. This year, these include screenings of Nancy Schreiber’s short film, A Dishful of Dollars, and Ember Films’ cinematic trailer, Refugium – both shot with the Canon EOS C700 FF – as well as Canon Ambassador Piotr Małecki's short documentary, George and George on the Lake, made with a Canon EOS C100. All of these films are set to dazzle, while seminars following the screenings will discuss the Cinema EOS cameras' on-set capabilities and the DOPs' creative approaches.
A seminar with double Sundance Cinematography award-winner Nancy Schreiber, ASC, will reveal some of her creative thinking and processes, including how her short film showed off the EOS C700 FF’s broad-ranging tonality and advanced capabilities using a range of anamorphic glass.
Following the Refugium screening, Canon will host a seminar with DOP and Director Jonathan Jones, where he will talk about Ember Films’ creative vision for the post-apocalyptic film and how shooting full-frame helped them to make the eerie, suspense-filled and thought-provoking trailer.
Director and DP Piotr Małecki will discuss his charming short documentary, which used a verité style to follow two friends, George and George, as they go on sailing trips around a lake post-retirement. Piotr will talk about his stylistic choices and well as his experience of working with the Canon EOS C100 equipped with Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8, Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 and Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L lenses.
In addition to the screenings by well-known and established filmmakers, Canon will host a session in conjunction with Warsaw Film School to highlight the work done by its students. Here, selected etudes by film students will be screened, followed by a discussion around how the right tools enable cinematographers to realise their daring creative visions. Find Out More.
Visitors to the Canon stand will get a chance to touch and try the latest Cinema EOS cameras – the Canon EOS C700 FF, the Canon EOS C200, and the Canon EOS C300 Mark II – alongside the full lineup of Canon cine lenses, including cine primes, top-end zooms, compact zooms, cine-servos and compact servos.
The Canon EOS C700 FF features a 5.9K Full Frame CMOS sensor offering low noise, wide colour gamut and wide dynamic range of 15-stops. Get hands-on with it at the Canon stand, where experts will be talking visitors through some of its main features and demonstrating how it works with a CODEX CDX-36150 recorder to record 5.9K 10/12-bit RAW files.
The Canon EOS C200 is a compact but high-performance video camera that captures sharp 4K 50P files in Cinema RAW Light, MP4 or XF-AVC formats, recording to CFAST 2.0™ or SD cards respectively. Additionally, it shoots 120P slow motion in Full HD.
The Canon EOS C300 Mark II is a durable and powerful tool for creative filmmakers that captures stunning 4K/Full HD video with 15 stops of dynamic range, external RAW output and Canon Log2.
Among the lens offering, the new Canon CN-E20mm T1.5 L F (unveiled at NAB 2018) will feature. A super-fast 4K cine-prime lens with broad compatibility for full frame cameras, this 20mm lens has anomalous dispersion glass to reduce chromatic aberration and an 11-blade iris for beautiful bokeh and rich depth of field. The CN-E14mm T3.1 L F, the CN-E24mm T1.5 L F, the CN-E35mm T1.5 L F and the CN-E50mm T1.3 L F are all lightweight and compact cine prime lenses for EF mounts, offering spectacular 4K image quality right across the frame. The CN-E85mm T1.3 L F and CN-E135mm T2.2 L F short telephoto lenses complete the 4K cine-prime lineup.
In the top-end zoom arena, see and discuss the CN-E30-300mm T2.95-3.7 – encompassing wide to telephoto lengths, plus exceptional usability for demanding high-end productions – and CN-E14.5-60mm T2.6, which is a wide-angle zoom lens with an industry-leading range. Both lenses come in EF or PL mount-compatible versions, for use with Canon Cinema EOS cameras or 35mm and Super 35mm cameras – as do the lightweight CN-E30-105mm T2.8 and CN-E15.5-47mm T2.8 compact zoom cinematography lenses.
Rounding off the lens showcase will be the cine-servo and compact servo lenses: the CN20x50 IAS H E1/P1, an ultra-telephoto lens with a class-leading focal length of 50-1000mm, extended to 1500mm with the built-in extender; the highly versatile CN7x17 KAS S E1/P1, a 17-120mm focal length lens featuring a servo drive unit for handheld shooting; the affordable CN-E18-80mm T4.4 L IS KAS S, with super-smooth servo zoom and focus; and the Canon CN-E70-200mm T4.4 L IS, with outstanding optics and versatility at an appealing price.

Competitions in the fields of TV pilots, documentary shorts, documentary features, music videos, directors’ debuts, cinematographers’ debuts and student filmmakers are also packed full of colourful, story-led and beautifully made entries that are sure to make the judges think.
